Social Good Accelerator EU Manifesto – Make it for good : We need Tech to run for Social Good

By 14 janvier 2019Non classé

For a better recognition and acceleration of social innovation in the European innovation framework.

For an acceleration of collaborations between Tech actors & social innovators.

For a sustained digital transition of European non profits.

#MakeItForGood, a new narrative for an inclusive European economy

As elsewhere on the planet, humanity is facing great challenges that cannot be met by technological progress alone, without rethinking the economic paradigm and rapidly accelerating the evolution of mentalities. Social sciences and social innovation experts are ahead of the curve and need to be supported in skills and funded by profitable sectors. Social innovation is a European asset for creating local and sustainable jobs.

The younger generations (the so-called « Millenials ») wonder more than their elders: what does Progress stand for? Can we call Progress strategies that lead to natural resources depletion, biodiversity loss and an increase in inequalities? Should it benefit instead the Common Good and the preservation of natural and societal resources rather than  short term strategies that don’t make a real positive change ?

The European Union, once a model of cooperation between peoples, peaceful and socially efficient political construction, is losing ground. We are witnessing the squandering of our social heritage together with a crisis of European identity and democracy.  As a matter of fact, many European citizens cannot exercise their social rights. Their basic needs (access to education, employment, health, housing) too often remain unsatisfied, despite the huge potential of Tech and the colossal amount of its investments.

A new narrative is missing between those who support an elitist Europe disconnected from citizens and those who, when downgraded, are attracted by populism and rejection of the EU interest. We need a third way representing citizen entrepreneurs and consumers, aware of the issues of our time and proposing a desirable vision of the world. It exists: it is the one of social innovation, for which Europe is at the forefront but which remains unknown to most Europeans and decision-makers.

At the same time, the Silicon Valley model shows its limits: technology not only does not sufficiently address social and environmental issues, but also creates unacceptable situations (“bullshit” jobs, delocalisation of production, etc.). To be revived, the European project must be exemplary if it wants to really achieve becoming the champion in the fight against climate and societal upheavals and propose an efficient alternative model in the existing « Tech War » between the American and Chinese giants.

We won’t make it if we don’t work together!

By breaking down the barriers between the worlds of technology and social innovation, sharing skills, practicing true collective intelligence, we can find quick solutions and rebuild a solid European model, an alternative to the Silicon Valley priorities, which creates shared value. Because Tech has the power to accelerate exchanges, facilitate the analysis of critical data, improve personal care, reduce our environmental footprint and give everyone equal access to rights and knowledge… But it can only be achieved if  if its builders – decision-makers, developers, designers, investors – do more to put it at the service of the social and solidarity economy to accelerate the sustainable transition of our societies.

We address civil society, non profit organizations who need digital acceleration and social innovators who develop Tech solutions for their users, but also Tech actors who wish to actively contribute to finding effective solutions to fight social inequalities, climate change and the democratic crisis.

Our proposals for the next European mandate: a new European social model through the development of a Social Good + Tech Alliance

European transition must be seen as an urgent, radical, symbiotic and global change, and tackle environmental, social and technological issues. In this prospect, we believe the EU has to make the digital transition and the change of scale of social innovators a priority for the next term of office, by increasing exchanges between Social innovators and the European Technology sector with clear quantitative and qualitative objectives. We count on the next Members of the EU Parliament, the Commissioners and the Member States to :

A) Promote the solutions provided by social innovation toward European innovation stakeholders and accelerate it with the help of technological tools.

  • A.1 Launch a pan-Europe Campaign target with action plans regarding awareness, communication, exchanges, coordination of projects etc to incorporate Tech in Social Innovation
  • A.2. Dedicate a European week on the model of the Social Good Week or the European Heritage Days to bring together different stakeholders – government, policy makers, educators, civil society leaders, entrepreneurs, students, innovators, scientists etc for a multiplication of opportunities for meetings, exchanges, competitions.
  • A.3 Promote a new European open source license model for social and environnemental impact project holders [Relevant inspiration: Creative commons].

B) Have social and environmental innovation recognized as equal to technological innovation, as a transversal and systemic form of innovation

  • B.1. Open all funding and incentives opportunities offered to R&D and Start-up program to non profits and social enterprises [Relevant EU policy: Horizon Europe]
  • B.2. Increase awareness and simplifying processes of funding, training, accelerators/incubators etc for socially innovative small-scale enterprises and grass root initiatives that mobilize communities or civil society such as Think Small First or European Social Fund Plus (ESF+)]
  • B.3. Inclusion of Social economy criteria within the Innovation criteria for public and private funding in programmes such as InvestEU
  • B.4 Organize a High Conference for Tech & Social Innovation in a European capital or dedicate a real space to Social Innovation within a major European Tech event [Relevant Inspiration : Social Innovation Village at Web Summit] .

C) Facilitate/accelerate skills exchange and co-innovation between technical skills holders and social and environmental skills holders.

  • C.1. Work on company and non profit incentives for skills exchange as well as technological and social-environmental co-innovation, with clear impact criterias [Relevant Inspiration : Global ProBono network, French Philantropy incentive .
  • C.2. Creation of dedicated public and private funds or regulations or incentives to diversify investment portfolios (percentage of investment with mandatory impact…) and better redistribute tech value in favor of inclusive digital transition. This could be in the form of a compulsory percentage of profits of organizations earning certain level of revenue, being dedicated to social innovation [Relevant inspiration : Indian law with mandatory « Corporate Social Responsibility‟)
  • C.3. Promote multidisciplinarity and social-technical training through European exchanges within the framework of Erasmus+, fellowships and European civic services, extended to continuing youth/ training/job seekers.

All together, Tech actors and social innovators we can promote these proposals towards candidates for the next European elections in 2019!
